G 69

Tales; Poems

19th cent. Paper. 19.5 × 12 cms. Pp. 222. This ms. was written by the same unidentified scribe as G 68 supra (and not by E. O'Reilly as stated in the National Library Report of the Trustees 1938-39, App. B, p. 22) and, like the latter, it is written in three different styles of handwriting (see p. 1 ff., p. 85 ff., 178 ff.). It had not, apparently, been long written (watermarked 1821) when it passed into Edward O'Reilly's possession - dates in March 1824 are written by O'Reilly in pencil on pp. 74, 78, 92, 100, 104, 126 - and it became no. 64 of his collection. In his ms. catalogue (R.I.A. 23 H 1, no. 64) O'Reilly states that it was "recently written" by the same unidentified scribe who wrote no. 63 in his collection - a ms. which did not find its way into the present collection and of which O'Reilly considered "the writing not very good." The paper (watermark, etc.) in this ms. is identical with that used by O'Reilly himself in G 63 and G 67 supra. On page 126 of the ms. the scribe had commenced writing a colophon i.e. Ar na sgriobhadh but he apparently changed his mind and put a line through it instead. Scribal pagination on laternate pages 1-222. It is bound in boards, the binder inserting one blank leaf after front cover and another before back cover. The relevant excerpt from O'Reilly's Sale Cat. is pasted on the top margin of p. 1. Phillipps Ms. 10296.
