Verse; Genealogies

17th cent. Paper. 19 × 15 cms. 246 pp. now numbered in pencil [pp. 3-245 bearing scribal foliation 1-123 (repeated in later hand) with ff. 14, 25-6 missing; ff. 63, 103 repeated (for which the later foliator wrote `63 bis' and `103 bis' respectively)]. Main scribe: Cú Choigríche Ó Cléirigh (unsigned and undated) pp. 23 (lower half), 46-8, 50-71 (upper half), 73-138 (except item on pp. 83 i, 108 i), 142-221, 223-45 (except p. 225 lines 1-6) and several additions throughout. Unidentified scribes: (b) pp. 3-28, 83 i, 108 i(?), 222 (upper half) and several marginal additions throughout (this scribe also collaborated with Ó Cléirigh in the following RIA compilations: 23 D 17, pp. 7-9 and a few additions throughout e.g. pp. (188), (206) [not noted in RIA Cat.]; B iii 1, ff 2 r i-v, 16 v i et passim and is possibly the scribe of the colophon on f. 89 r [this manuscript has at least 3 different scribes, not noted in RIA Cat.]; C ii 1, p. 1; C iii 3, pp. 222. 6-11, 279 v 11-14); (c) pp. 29-45, 49, 139-41 (this hand resembles that of (b) but appears to differ sufficiently from it to warrant its being attributed to another scribe and the fact that it occurs in another Ó Cléirigh manuscript [23 D 17 p. (3), not noted in RIA Cat.] helps the suggestion); (d) pp. 1-2 (the list of contents), 71 (lower half), 222 lower margin (?), marginal quatrain on p. 23 and marginal additions here and there (this hand is possibly that of B iii 1, f. 16 v about 9 lines in the middle); (e) pp. 225 lines 1-6 246 and marginal quatrain on p. 113.

RIA 23 N 28 was formerly the end part (ff. 132-50; see earlier foliation of that manuscript) of the present manuscript. The Academy fragment consists of those items listed in the table of contents (p. 2) but no longer in the present manuscript. There is no indication what text(s) - if any - was on the missing folios (ff. 124-31) - those following the last folio of the present manuscript and preceding those of the Academy fragment. All the texts in the list of contents are accounted for. Perhaps these missing folios were blank, inserted for the purpose of completing the text of `Gabháltas Conaill' which breaks off here on top of last page at a point corresponding with the imperfect ending of the other copy of the text in a Brussels manuscript (for which see under p. 227 below).

It may be noted that this manuscript has much in common with RIA B iv 2 - a compilation by Míchéal Ó Cléirigh - and it contains a few poems, which as far as has been ascertained, are not found elsewhere (e.g. poems on pp. 223, 225 below).

Jottings in the manuscripts include: (p. 36) `in ye 7th year of ye reign of this K. was our lord born'; (p. 43 col. c) `17 years'; (pp. 68, 71, 81-2) `N.B.'; (p. 94) `Laogaire et Laubhr'; other scribblings occur throughout.

The manuscript is in good condition although several pages have been strengthened by addition of strips of paper. Bound in green morocco richly gilt with marbled end-papers; `Ancient Irish prose and vese' in gilt on spine; `Monck Mason Sale Cat. 555 parker £15', `555 M', `17082 Ph' on verso of front end-paper; `NB The last four tracts wanting R. I B' on recto and `Phillipps MS 17082' on verso of front fly-leaf. Listed under `Wm. Monk Mason's MSS. (of Dublin)' in Phillipps's Catalogus.
