Materia Medica

18th cent. Paper. 20 × 16 cms. Pp. 240. Scribe: Muiris Ó Gorman. In the colophon on p. 238 the scribe states that he finished the transcript in Dublin on the 25th March, 1761.

From the following passage at the end of the tract (p. 237) it would seem that the compiler or translator of this common tract on Materia Medica was Tadhg Ó Cuinn (1415): Gurab amhlaidh sin fagmaid crich inmholta in leabhair so go cumair tarbhach noch do tairngeadh a hainntitairibh ┐ a herbalairibh cathrach Salernitani ┐ do reir comhaontaighe sduideir doctuiridhe Sléibhe Pisalain ┐ adubhradar na doctuirighi sin uile gach ní tindscaintear a nainm Dia. Gurab amhlaidh sin crichnaighthear an leabhar so ó Thadhg h. Cuinn .i. baisiler. a físigeacht. Cf. G 11 supra, T.C.D. H. 3. 22, Nat. Libr. of Scotland Mss. III and LX for similar passages.

The ms. is bound in half-leather with Irish MSS. in gilt letters on spine. Phillipps Ms. 6488 and MSS. No. 50 are written on inside of front cover. The binder has inserted two blank leaves after the front cover and two before the back cover. The words Irish Herbal are written on the recto of the first blank leaf. The pagination is scribal.
