Iomarbhágh na bhFileadh and Other Verse; Irish Hymns from Liber Hymnorum

18th cent. Paper. 18.7 × 15 cms. Pp. 80. Scribe: Aodh Ó Dálaigh. The scribal entry, uí Shuillimháin cuimhnigh air Aodh Ó Dhalaigh, on p. 69 l.23 apparently refers to Francis Stoughton Sullivan of T.C.D., patron and employer of Ó Dálaigh. There are 3 qq. on p. 55 (see below) in the hand of Tadhg Ó Neachtain. In this transcript (pp. 29 [first five lines], 31-34, 56 l.8.-73) of the Irish hymns from T.C.D. E.4.2, the Irish Liber Hymnorum, Ó Dálaigh writes in his characteristically inaccurate and slovenly style; his transcript, nevertheless, helps in reading some words and passages which were faded in E.4.2 at the time of publication (see The Irish Liber Hymnorum, ed. Bernard and Atkinson, Henry Bradshaw Society 1898, pp. 186, 187, 190). When transcribing the verse, however, Ó Dálaigh writes in a neat hand and as well as numbering the poems also numbers the lines in each poem. For two of the poems (pp. 41, 46) he gives a heading in Latin and adds many marginal notes and references also in Latin. These notes usually refer to his exemplar (see p. 37 where he states that some of the quatrains can hardly be read in the original on account of age) particularly when quatrains are wanting in the original (see pp. 41, 42, 43, 51, 78). A portion (at least 40 pages) of the ms. is missing at the beginning as is indicated by the older pagination which begins here on p. 41 (=p.1 modern pagination), and since the first poem here (p. 1) is number 30 it would appear that the missing pages included another 29 poems (presumably mainly of the Iomarbhágh).

The scribe used O'Flaherty's Ogygia (1685) (see pp. 2, 76, 77) and on its authority he gives the authorship of some of the poems (see pp. 1, 41, 46). Of particular interest is his footnote in Latin on p. 1 where he states that this poem was, according to O'Flaherty, written by Florence Conry under an assumed name (Robert Mac Artuir). This scribal footnote probably refers to O'Flaherty's statement (Ogygia, pt. iii, chap. xxvii, p. 212) which is translated (Hely ed. 1793, pt. iii, chap xxvii, p. 69) "... the illustrious Archbishop of Tuam, Florence Conry, who underwent the tonsure under the person of Robert the son of Arthur, from ear to ear, lest any ass's ears should be consealed." Other scribal references in the ms. are to Keating (p. 45) and to Cod. Lecan, Cod. O Duvegain, Liber na hUachongbhala (p. 73).

The catch-word Bennacht appears at the foot of p. 53 (older pagination 83 afterwards changed to 93) but this word does not refer to the opening words of the poem on the following page (p. 54, older pagination 86 afterwards changed to 94); it is the opening word of the poem on p. 50 as the older pagination (84 afterwards changed to 90) would indicate. The ms. is bound in full rexine. The shelf no. 4^to/No. 2 Irish MSS. Paper of the Heber collection and Phillipps MS. 9359 appear on the front fly-leaf; some pencilled numbers appear on the back. A modern pencilled pagination has been used for page references in the present catalogue, the scribal pagination being given in the brackets following.
