Fragmentary Verse

18th cent. Paper. 15 × 9.5 cms. (Pp. 1-18), 15.5 × 9.5 cms. (pp. 19-22), 16 × 10cms. (pp. 23-26). Pp. 26. The ms. consists of fragments of three different mss. written by different scribes of which only one is identified viz. Aodh Ó Dálaigh (Hugh O'Daly) the scribe on pp. 19-21. The hand of the third fragment (pp. 23-26) is the same as that of a fragment contained in G 25 supra, pp. 1-13, and though both fragments are different parts of the same text ("Scáthán Shacramuinte na hAithridhe") they do not appear to have been part of the one transcript in as much as the pages are not of the same dimensions.

Pp. 1-18 are fragments of a collection of devotional verse. P. 4 carried the number 64, apparently part of a former pagination and the only scribal numbering in the ms. Of the first four poems (pp. 1-16) none is complete here. In some copies (BB pp. 212-229, T.C.D. H. 1. 7, fol. 146) the poem "Naoimhsheanchas naomh Innse Fáil" is followed (or preceded as in BB) by an alphabetical list of saints under their respective ancestors, whereas in the present ms. the poem is followed (p. 14) by a prose summary of its content giving the number of saints who sprang from the different leading families. This summary etc., is, according to the scribe (p. 14) by Flaithrí Ó Maol Chonaire.

The last page (p. 18) of the first fragment was used by another unidentified hand for the purpose of drawing an affidavit (for which see p. 18 infra). The following names, etc., occur on the last page (pp. 22) of the second fragment: Midchael M^c Mathghamhnadh, Michael M^cMahaon, William Powel at y^e next to Mr. Rochs office in Ussers Iland.

The ms. is unbound; the three fragments are stitched together, the end paper (uncut) of the third fragment forming a cover for the whole. Pp. 5-8 are wrongly placed, they should follow p. 14. The edges of the first fragment (pp. 1-18) are in a frayed condition. Phillipps Ms. 9364 and the former shelf-mark, 12°/No. 1 Irish MSS. Paper, of the Heber collection appear on the front cover; the number 644 1/10 appears on a fly-leaf.

17 Bonaventura Ó Heodhasa. Headed Atheanta Dé anso a ndan on bhrathir Bonaventura Ua Heodhasa. A number of poems extracted from Bonaventura Ó Heodhasa's An Teagasg Criosdaidhe (Rome 1707). The ms. agrees with the printed text. The poems are (1) Da n-iarra osgladh gun ghrádh, 3 qq., (2) headed Cuig aithne na hEagailsi beg. Cuir a cceann a ndobhairt me, 5 qq., (3) headed Dona Sacramainte beg. Na seacht sacramainte dhoit, 2 qq. Ends p. 18.

18 The following affidavit appears on this page: Thom Mac donogh being due sworn sayeth that he bought a cow of Garett Towell and soon after being told by some of his neighbours that they suspected he w^d be call^d to acc^nt for y^e said cow after w^ch the said Garett with his brother Bryen Towell being in this informant's house, this informant charged the said Garett and Bryen w^th having sold an ill gotten cow [where] upon Bryen Towell told the informant that he wud not be bound (to sw)eare anyones for he w^d be bound noe one w^d challeng (it).
