Scáthán Shacramuinte na hAithridhe

18th cent. Paper. 15.4 × 10 cms. Pp. 310+[20]. There is no scribal signature. The hand is small and neat and slopes slightly backwards. The exact watermark in the paper of the ms. is not in Heawood but it resembles a type which belongs to the late 17th and early 18th cent. G 40 infra is by the same scribe and has a similar watermark. From the names on p. 1 it would appear that this ms. was owned by at least five persons before it found its way into the Phillipps collection. In 1738 it was owned by Joseph Kennedy (Ioseph Ó Cinéide a leabhar) who bought it from a Wm Cherry. David Fliny (bhbh. Ó Fline) would appear to have been a subsequent owner and also the scribe of the medical prescription on p. 3 infra. Uillíam O Linachain was possibly the next owner. The last name on this page is that of W. Shaw Mason underneath which is Phillipps Ms. 9752.

Two unidentified hands appear in the ms., the first on pp. 5, 7, the second, on the verso of the second last unnumbered page, notes a single entry of sales of peadges - the parties concerned being Maurice Nagle and Pegg Sullivan and partner - in the year 1741.

The text of the Scáthán is paginated by the scribe. A modern pencilled pagination of the whole volume has, however, been adopted for the present catalogue. The ms. is bound in leather, the cover is now almost detached . A leaf appears to have been torn away between pp. 4-5.
