G 38

Religious, Moral, Historical and Ossianic Verse

18th cent. Paper. 19 × 15.5 cms. Pp. 192. There is no scribal signature but the hand is that of Muiris Ó Gormáin - scribe of G 19, G 20, G 28 supra, G 64 infra. On two places in the ms. (pp. 99, 153) marginal jottings appear in another hand - signed W. on p. 153; on pp. 37-49 there are interlinear glosses in English in pencil in a later hand. A former owner's page of the ms. i.e. Pattruicc ua L... cearts[ea]lbár an leabrain so. The ms. has a scribal pagination but from p. 11 onwards the numbering occurs only on every second page.

The ms. is bound in half-leather, the binder inserting three blank leaves after the front cover and three before the back cover. The paper used in the binding is watermarked 1807. The verso of the third blank leaf was later used for a list (in English) of the contents of the ms. It would appear that the opening leaves of the ms. were missing before binding. Phillipps MS. 9753; previously no. CLVII in the Adam Clarke collection - that number in gilt is pasted to the spine.
