G 41-44

Transcripts from Book of Lecan, Book of Ballymote, etc.

19th cent. Paper. 4 folio volumes. No. 41 vi+286 pp., No. 42 vi+303 pp., No. 43 vi+154 pp., No. 44 ii+162 pp. There is no subscriptio. These volumes formed part (Nos. 41-44) of Edward O'Reilly's collection of Irish mss. and are described by him in his catalogue (1825) - now R.I.A. 23 H 1. In his catalogue O'Reilly states (p. 78) that these volumes were "transcribed ... by the late James Wolf, who was employed as a scribe by the Gaelic Society of Dublin in the year 1807, and after the dissolution of that body, by the late Wm Haliday Esq. and others". The watermark "PF 1808" appears in all four volumes. Inside the front cover of each of the four volumes is the armorial book-plate of Edward O'Reilly and also some pencilled notes by T. Phillipps, in whose collection these mss. were numbered 10261-10264. They are bound in boards with leather backing, the words Liber Lecanus gilt-lettered on the spine. The scribe has foliated G 41-3 and paginated G 44. A modern pencil pagination has been adopted in the present catalogue. The transcripts contained in these four mss. are from the Book of Lecan, Book of Ballymote, Egerton 1782 and the Senchas Már.
