Glossaries

19th cent. Paper. 24 × 19 cms. Pp. [ii]+198. There is no scribal signature. The ms. is the work of two scribes: Edward O'Reilly (pp. 1-154) and his son Patrick O'Reilly (pp. 154-193). The identity of the second and less known scribe has been ascertained from O'Reilly's catalogue (R.I.A. 23H1) where he says (p. 154): "... my handwriting as far as page 154, the remainder is the writing of my son Patrick, who after a short (21 years) but virtuous life died a happy death on the 15th April 1825." Patrick writes in a smaller and neater hand than his father.

The source of this transcript is not stated but it is clear that the O'Reillys transcribed from a ms. of Peter O'Connell, B.M. Add. 28,257, as they include the latter's observations and translations. The name P. O'Connell appears after the entry cuntess .i. a Countess on p. 118 col. 2 in the present ms. The version of Cormac's Glossary in these two mss. is akin to the YBL version (ed. Meyer, Anec. Ir. Mss., vol. iv) with some minor additions and ommissions. Additional entries from a version of the Leabhar Breac have been inserted in the present ms. by an unidentified hand. The scribal pagination has been adopted in the present catalogue.

The ms. is bound in boards, the binder inserting one blank leaf after the front cover and another before the back cover. No. 100 in O'Reilly's cat.; Phillipps Ms. 10273.
