G 66

Calendars; Devotional

19th cent. Paper. 13 × 10 cms. Pp. [10] + 192. The scribe, Edward O'Reilly, says: "this is my handwriting copies from more ancient books. It is a selection of various prayers, containing Morning and Evening Prayers; the Church Litanies; Prayers at Mass; Jesus Psalter; the seven Penitential Psalms; the Crown of the Blessed Virgin and etc. I made this copy for my own use and it was one of the first books I ever wrote in Irish" (O'Reilly's cat. of Irish Mss., R.I.A. 23 H 1, no. 59, p. 124). O'Reilly was the owner of several mss. containing religious material, e.g. G 58 supra, R.I.A. 23 I 9 (written 1716); see also introductory note to Eg. 195 in B.M. ii, p. 33. The R.I.A. ms. (no. 168 of O'Reilly's collection) appears to have been his exemplar for the calendar (p. 1 infra) and Table of Movable Feasts (p. 18 infra) in the present ms. Lá Nodloc beag is given for January 1st in the calendars in both mss. (see also R.I.A. 23 A 8 and 23 A 22 for similar entry). With the exception of the Irish version of "Pange lingua gloriosi" on p. 85 infra (for which see B.M. Eg. 197, B.M. ii, pp. 44-6), all the devotional material in this ms. is contained in R.I.A. 23 A 22 of which B.M. Eg. 193 is a copy and for which Flower (B.M. ii, pp. 582-84) gives sources, etc.

The ms. is bound in calf with gilt tooling. Scribal pagination on laternate pages from 1-191. O'Reilly's book-plate is affixed inside front cover. Phillipps Ms. 10293.
