Hugh Reily's History of Ireland, etc

19th cent. Paper. 19 × 11.5 cms. Pp. [12] + 198 + [6]. The scribe is unidentified; he is not E. O'Reilly as stated in the National Library Report of the Trustees 1938-39, App. B, p. 21, followed by the editor of Stair Fhír-Cheart ar Éirinn (Leabhair ó Láimhsgríbhnibh iii, 1941), p. iii. This ms. was no. 55 of Edward O'Reilly's collection of Irish mss., and the only statement he makes in his catalogue (R.I.A. 23 H 1, p. 120) regarding the identity of the scribe is that the writing is "modern". The ms. is written in three different styles of handwriting (see pp. 1 ff. 16-21, 176-177) and, except for certain omissions (noted infra) it appears to be a transcript of R.I.A. I v 1 (Section B). For information concerning content, author, translator, etc., see Stair Fhír-Cheart ar Éirinn, pp. i-ii, ed. N. Ní Shéaghdha, 1941. Ms. G. 69 infra is by the same scribe as the present ms. Because of scribal errors in the pagination (which occur between pp. 165-177) a modern pagination continues from p. 165 to the end of the ms. The ms. is bound in boards, the binder inserting one blank leaf after the front cover and another before the back cover. The words Genuine History of Ireland by Hugh O'Reilly are written vertically in the hand of E. O'Reilly on the first fly-leaf, over which has been pasted the relevant excerpt from O'Reilly's Sale Catalogue. Phillipps Ms. 10295.

Page

[i]-[xii] Blank. These pages were presumably intended for the Introduction (see ed., N. Ní Shéaghdha, Stair Fhír-Cheart ar Éirinn, pp. 1-4) to the History (beg. p. 1 infra) which is omitted in this ms.

1 Stair Fhírc[h]eart air Éirinn. P. 1 An Céad Pairt. P. 47 An Dara Cuid. P. 104, l.10 [Deimhniughadh ... Catoilicithe na hÉirionn]. With the exception of the first two names the scribe omitted the other names of the signatories but left the following two pages (p. 111-2) blank, apparently intending to include them later. P. 113 Oraid Deigheanach agus Briathra Báis óiliféir Ploincead. P. 131 Tuarasgbhail Aithghearr ar Luimneach. P. 133 Coinghil Thíorthamhla Luimnigh. The Latin at the end (see ed., p. 134) is omitted here. P. 145 Coinghil Chogamhuil Luimnigh. P. 159 Cás Chatoilicighe Romhanach na hÉirionn [Navy]. Ends p. 198 with Uilliam O Murcha May 10 1772 written in pencil at foot of page (= ed., p. 178). The remainder of the ms. is blank.
