Ossianic and other Verse; Tales; Catechism

18th-19th cetn. Paper. 19.5 × 14.5 cms. 202 pp. Scribe: Tadhg Ó Ferríghleo (Tim O Ferrelly, Farrell, Ferrell) `o Ceanntsalle, baile gramhar' (p. 39), 1788-90, who writes in various styles but is liberal with his signature. An unidentified scribe wrote pp. 180, 184-5, 188-9 (one line on each page), 190. The name Semus Ó Suillibhann, written on the inner margin of p. 184, line 1, may be that of the latter scribe (and/or perhaps the author of the poem on p. 184), and may also be identified with the `James Sulliv[an]' one-time owner of the manuscript (see further).

The scribal numbering, 3-309, shows about a hundred pages missing: pp. 1-2, 121-32 (containing the end of the homily on St Patrick), 191-245, 254-81, 288- 9, 292-3, 296-7. An error in the scribe's pagination occurs after p. 57, the scribe having skipped two pages. There is an error in the binding: the last four pages in the manuscript, containing a list of ms compendia, should, according to the scribal numbering, precede the treatise on the alphabet (pp. 191-8). A modern pencilled pagination has been used for page references in the present catalogue, the scribal pagination begin given in parentheses following. The following entry on p. 145 by a `James Sulliv[an]' revels the owner of the manuscript in the year 1799: `James Tobin at Achill that lent me this Book, 20th of Febry ois an Tiarna mile ccccccclx19'. The following recorded ownership for the year 1801 is given on p. 5 lower marg. (inverted): `Donchadh O Murchughadh a labh ┐ a leamhar anso mbliaghain daois Chriost mile ┐ ocht gceud ┐ aon maile leis' (`Mr Denis O Murphy', p. 7; `... Denis O Murphy the Carbery bard', p. 172). Other jottings in the manuscript include: `Dunuchadh(...)', p. 1; `A man whos[...] min-[...]', p. 7: `I demand your name', p. 141.

The manuscript is bound in half-leather with the number `CLVIII' (Adam Clark Library) labelled on spine; a printed slip from Baynes sale-catalogue `131 - Irish Miscellanies, 4to, a very MS. - 3 l. 13 s. 6 d.' is labelled on recto of front cover, `Phillipps MS 10353' written on the verso. Several of the leaves are worn away at the edges, a few are entirely loose and there is much staining.
