Tales

18th cent. Paper. 19.5 × 16 cms. 102 pp. Scribes: (a) Seadhan Ó Murchadha, `Innse an Ringce' [par. of Ardagh, Co. Cork], 1735, pp. 1-55; (b) Eamon Ciónnt (Edmund Kent), 1775, pp. 57-102.

The following entries by owners and others would indicate that the manuscript passed through various hands all in the near vicinity of its place of origin: (a) `Labharais O Shea [in ogham consaine] ce nach e a labhar ...' (p. 55); (b) `Pierce Kent book Dated February 29th 1798', `Pierce Kents Book dated June 1786', `Richard Smiddys hand but not his book October 8th 1790', `(...) Smiddy his hand but not his Book February 24th 1786', `Smiddy's book Dated 1799 spare not nor spend be this your', `John Hennesy Book Dated this 7 of June 1784 That wrote his name wrote by me Philomath Scavant' (`Seagan O Hennesa'), `Daniel Kelihers book dated 1784' (`Domhnall Ó C'), `Thymothy Drisciolls Book Dated May 22nd (p. 56 vertical); (c) `David Kent his Book ', `Richard SMiddys hand April the 16th 1786 etc.' (p. 58); (d) `Daibhidh Ciuint Dia go deo linn' (p. 68 inverted); (e) `David Kents Booke Dated (...)' (p. 70 inverted); (f) `Hic liber pertinet ad P. K. Kent' (p. 76 inverted); (g) `O Celiher Seagheainn' (p. 79); (h) `Uilliam Breathnach' (repeated 3 times) (p. 84); (i) `Daniel Collins', `Thimothy' (verso of back end-paper). Other jottings include: (j) `biodh mar sin is do gheabhar grádh', `I pray all friends will come in haste' (p. 56); (k) `If you are poor be sure no freedom make' (p. 86 inverted).

Such features as content and ownership, which the present manuscript has in common with G 79 above, are noted in the introductory remarks to the latter. The manuscript is not in good condition, the section written by Ó Murchadha being badly stained and faded in many parts. A scribal pagination, now very faded, shows three leaves missing at the beginning; at least one leaf ismissing at the end. The binding - of otter skin - is badly worn; `10842 Ph', `Phillipps MS 10842' on p. 1. Two slips - one in hand of Séamus Ó Casaide, 1932, the other by Fachra Éilgeach - containing information about the scribes of the manuscript are pasted on verso of front cover.
