G 130

Verse; Tales; Transcripts From Egerton 1782

18th cent. Paper. 20 × 15 cms. (some leaves of lesser dimensions). 194 pp. [scribal ff. 1-4 + ff. 1-92]. Main scribe: Michael Ó Broinn, 1725-7 `a mBaile Atha Cliath' (pp. 18, 73, 148, 189 [for this scribe see G 61 above]. Aodh Ó Dálaigh probably wrote the quatrain on p. 60i and an unidentified scribe wrote pp. 61-71i. Pp. 1-2 (not part of the original manuscript) containing `the Contents of this Irish book,' are in the hand of Muiris Ó Gormáin (this manuscript is not, however, included in the latter's catalogue of books and manuscripts, RIA 23 H (a) [1761], NLI G 664 [1772, 1776]).

What the scribe Michael Ó Broinn copied from Egerton 1782 (see BM ii 262) is shown below by the references to the numbered articles of Flower's catalogue of Eg. 1782 in BM ii 263-83. See G 61 above for other transcripts from the latter manuscript by this scribe.

The manuscript is rubricated; lower half of pp. 183-4 cut away with no apparent loss of text. Bound in green morocco richly gilt with marbled end- papers; `Irish Verse and Prose' in gilt on spine; `Monck Mason Cat. 558, Parker £6,' `558 M' and `17080 Ph' on verso of front end-paper, `Phillipps MS 17080' on verso of front fly-leaf. Listed under `Wm. Monk Mason's MSS. (of Dublin)' in Phillipps's Catalogus.
