Law; Transcripts From Egerton 1782

18th cent. Paper. 22 × 18 cms. 206 pp. (scribal pagination 1-33 followed by foliation 34-122 with several errors).

Writing in double column. Scribe: Ualentín Ua Hanluain (pp. 56b, 116a), 1727. Much of the writing on pp. 6-14 may, however, be by another scribe.

The Book of Ballymote was the scribe's exemplar for some legal and other material (note his colophon p. 116b), while his exemplar for the legal text Cóic Conaire Fuigaill - `an sean leabar meamram' written by one Flaithrige mac Murchaidh now appears lost. The transcripts in this manuscript from Egerton 1782 include the text the lacuna in which caused Ó Hanluain to write an entry in his exemplar (Eg. f. 86V; see flower, BM ii 261-2). References are given below to Flower BM ii 285-97 for the items in the present manuscript of which Egerton is the exemplar.

This manuscript, and not TCD 1289 as stated in BM i 147, was the source for E. O'Reilly's transcripts in Egerton 153 (including the colophon of Flaithrige mac Murchaidh, not noted in BM i 148). The markings and dates (`4th March' etc.) and a few comments (p. 128 etc.) in pencil in the present manuscript appear to be in the hand of O'Reilly.

Although TCD 1289 pp. 151-174 (scribe: Tadhg Ó Neachtain, 1718) contains similar material (Cóic Conaire Fuigill etc.) to that in the present manuscript pp. 33-56 (including Flaithrige mac Muirchaidh's colophon, not noted in TCD Cat.), orthographical differences show that the two copies are not dreived from the same exemplar.

The following scribal entries occur: (a) p. 64 upp. marg. `mar sin fuarus he romham si tsen lebar;' (b) p. 88 low. marg. `Mallacht for laim dheanta in duibh sin;' (c) p. 177 low. marg. `is se dubh is fearr gidh sen lam roscribh.' The cropping of the margins at time of binding has caused loss of scribal numbering and entries, and text in several places (pp. 39-40, 51, 64, 69, 70, 89, 103, 110, 116, 159 etc.).

Bound in brown calf with `Bearla Feine' in gilt and `17089' labelled on spine; two blank leaves after front cover and before back cover. Front cover now loose. Listed under `Wm. Monk Mason's MSS. (of Dublin)' in Phillipps's Catalogus.
