Miscellaneous

19th cent. Paper. A collection of miscellaneous fragments of manuscripts and scraps pasted on separate blank leaves and bound in rexine (37 × 23 cms) with `Beatha ┐ Martardha Naomh Mharairéide 1813' gilt-lettered on spine. The following note by Séamus Ó Casaide dated `Baile Átha Cliath 1909' occurs on recto of the front endpaper: `[na giotaí atá sa leabhar so do bhíodar ins an gcóip de "Forus Feasa na hEirionn" (1760) do bhí i seilbh an sgríobhneóra úd Eoghan Ua Caomhánaigh (1828). Do cheannuigh Maoilsheachlán Ua Clochasaigh an leabhar úd (leis na giotaibh so?) ó shagart éigin agus do dhíol sé dom [sic] é 1909]', and for which see G 338 below. Ó Casaide ms 3.

(a)

Bifolium (13 × 18 cms) written by an unidentified scribe. Contains (i) lists of kings, brehons, historians and poets with English definition; (ii) names of poets numbered 1-51 beg. with Aonghas na Diadhachta and ending with Carolan; (iii) list of manuscripts and their contents headed `Cuid do leabharaibh seanchais na hEireann'; (iv) list of `Modern Poets and Rhymers'.

(b)

Single leaf (25.5 × 20 cms) with printed material on verso concerning market for corn, wheat etc. dated `Liverpool, 2d April 1822'. Contains on recto (acephalous) historical data in English on Irish families. Written by same unidentified scribe as (a) above.

(c)

Two blank leaves with scraps pasted on them containing a descriptive list of Irish manuscripts (no scribe or date given) numbered 2-10 with 3 cancelled. Cf. (d) below. Scribe unidentified.

(d)

One leaf (30 × 16 cms) containing descriptive list of Irish manuscripts (no scribe or date given) numbered 1-5, 9-10. Scribe unidentified.

(e)

Three scraps by three unidentified scribes: (i) A few stanzas (with many lines cancelled) on `Eoghan ceart dfhuil mhórdha Chaomhánach'. First uncancelled line here beg. as dearbh go stróicfin an fheóil is go faicthear giolla i ngeall treasa, Ní cómhfhad fhasa gach slat, Ní bhion clár gan branán. (iii) Legendary history beg. In the reign of Heremon, the Picts landed in Ireland at Inbhear Slainge. `For Martin Creagh Esq.' is written vertically on verso.

(f)

Fragment (11 unnumbered leaves) of manuscript. 18 × 15 cms. Three (?) unidentified scribes. for date of writing see below. Contains the following items:

(i) Beatha Et Martardha Naomh Mharairéide Sonn. Beg. Geinn tsúthain tsaorchineálach áluinn ... don chine Ghintlíghe ┐ donn aicme Judaighíoch dar budhe cómhainnim Meargaréad. Ends (recto of 7th leaf) iseadh do bhídh dá chantain aco non est similis tui in libertate, Amen. `Fóircheann 12th December 1813.' Followed by `Séamus Ua Casaide Baile Átha Cliath 1909'.

(ii) `The Shamrock of Green Éirinn.' Come all you jovial souls, fill up your flowing bowls. 6 stt. numbered, all ending with the words `Cruiscín lán'.

(iii) `A Poetical description of Pallis-Hall and Lough Lean addressed to Mac Cárthaig Mór by Owen Mc Carthy.' Hail pleasures Mansion screened by natures care. 108 lines. `The end.'

(iv) `Aig so caithreimm do rine Aindrías Mac Cruitín do Dhonn Dabhach an tan mheathadar na huaisle air an Donn shuas .i. Donn mac Míleadh, do báthadh aig na dabhacha gainmhíghe air tteacht Chlanna Míleadh go hÉirin (1733).' Beanúghadh doímhin duit a Dhoín na Daídhbhche. 26 stt. numbered. `Foircheann.'

(v) `Connchúbhar Ó Ríordáin cct.' An tan do bhádar Gaoidheail a nÉirin beó. 4 stt.

(vi) `Freagra Dhiarmada Óig Ui Mhurchadha air Sheufradh Ó Dhonnchadha.' Ní Sorcha is orchra dom dheuraibh dearc. 9 stt. `Deire.'

Single leaf (20 × 18 cms) written by two or three unidentified scribes. Contains on recto `Agallamh tarla idir Domhnuill Uí Miadhcháin ┐ Theampoill Chille Muire Mic Mathghamhna. Air Buachaill Caol Dubh.' Is tréadhlag taoimsi go créim[r]ioch claoidhte led thaobh a Chill Mhuire is dealbh snó. 7 stt. numbered. `Foircheann.' Followed (in a different hand and in roman script) by jotting `an teag 'tan shidsin ag teact da ndiothughadh go sleactaid d'Iosa 's don aspaloid' and scribblings.

On verso is the following petition: `To Barry Denny Esquire / the humble petition of Cornelius Sullivan sheweth that petr. is a poor widower that endeavours to (...) helpless charge of seven children being trusting to one cow (...). That petr. was on the tenth instant attached to the mannor court of Tralee for a debt of six shillings and the ensuing day distringuis [sic] were issued against him and his only one cow taken the third or fourth day after said attachment with debt this petr. paid with five shillings and six pence cost ...'. The remainder is overwritten on cancelled material.

A gathering of ten unnumbered leaves (18 × 14.5 cms) written by three scribes of whom one, Malachy Curry, is identified (signature on recto of seventh leaf). The word `Limerick' occurs on recto of the first leaf.

It contains the following verse: (i) [I] am a bold batchelor jolly and free / both city and country is equal to me. 8 stt. numbered. `The end to the Pleasant Sweet Banks of the Suir.' (ii) My darling is stately and gay, sweet as the lillies in spring. 6 stt. numbered. (iii) `A new song composed by one Barrett in the County Cork in praise of a building.' In Gurteen there is a fine prospect, much fairer then Phoebus doth shine. 8 stt. numbered. (iv) `The Sctoch [sic] Maid going to sell her Barley.' Cold and raw the north wind blowd. black in the morning early. 7 stt. numbered. `Deire.' (v) `The following verses were composed for Lord Carbery's daughter, Carass Court.' In the Court of Carass there is a topping fine female. 8 stt. numbered. `Fóircheann.' (vi) Let the Catholic Church be now arrayed in deep disconsolation. 10 stt. numbered. `Malachy Curry.' (vii) `A New Song.' The year Ninety Eight compleats all England in bloom / The French will invade adn wear their laurel in June. 8 stt. numbered. `Conclusion.' (viii) `A new song called the Plains of Lochmore.' I am pining each day in despair my heart is quite broke. 5 stt. numbered. (ix) `Freedom of Election. Tune "Merrily dance the Quakers".' Britons! whose souls the influence feel of reason and reflection. 6 stt. numbered + chorus'. (x) `The Tippling Philosopher.' Diagones surly and proud who snarled at the Macedon Youth. 11 stt. numbered. (xi) I pray you draw near and do hear what I say to you. 15 stt. numbered and `chorus' beg. I am sorry you tarry to marry I entreat you.

(i)

Five unnumbered leaves (20 × 16 cms) written by an unidentified scribe. It contains the following verse: `Aig seo an Easbloid.' A Shéamuis cháig do rás na bPéurach. 29 lines. Followed by `Ag so freagra Sheamuis air Próinsías.' Do beart ní fhónan glór gan éifeacht. 30 lines. Followed by `Ag so freagra Phróinséis air Shéam[us]'. As fuiris aitne an peacadh rín Ébha. Breaks off with the 144th line. Many lines defective due to frayed edges.

(j)

Two bifolia (18 × 14.5 cms) written by an unidentified scribe. The following occurs in the last page (otherwise blank): `Many and innumerable are the vicissitudes of fortune as every man may know / County of the City of Cork / By Sir Malachy Stuacach'. Contains the following verse: (i) `The Princess Royal.' [W]hat tho you leave the British court and to fair Lorraine resort. 6 stt . numbered. (ii) `Thomas (To)omy in praise of Adare.' In my leisure hours I admire [in correction] the seat at Sweet Adare of ancient (...). 8 stt. numbered. (iii) `Thos. Gleeson's Wishes.' To crown the soft comforts of life, and hieghten the pleasures of nine sacred muses endued with infallibility. 8 stt. numbered. (v) My dear be advised by your pastor, consider how gallant men care. 5 stt. numbered (vi) `A new song called Erin's Liberty.' Once more the Holy Water that great Elias prophecied. 12 stt. numbered.

16 numbered pages (20.5 × 11 cms) written probably by the scribe of (a) above. It contains notes in English on various categories in Irish Grammar (including the article, noun, adjective and verb) apparently culled from printed grammars, including that of O'Molloy (see reference on p. 3).

Single leaf (19.5 × 16 cms) written on recto only by an unidentified scribe. Headed `Pais ar dTiaghearna Iosa Criost do reir Mhathamh an tSuibhsgealuidhe'. Beg. Agus air coriochnuigha [sic] na bhfocal so dar dTiaghearna Iosa Criost adbeart rena dheisgiobail. Breaks off with page [de]ith bpíosa fithchíod airgíod do ┐ as sín amach.

Single leaf (19.5 × 15 cms) containing the following poem written on recto by an unidentified scribe: `Chum Seaghuin Uí Thuama (...)'. As aobhach linne a shéimhfhir oilte maraon leat sileadh go deoirfhliuch. 5 stt. Promissory notes on verso: (i) `I promise to pay Peeter H. O Connel or order the ful sum of four pounds sterling value recd. this 17th day of January 1761 and one / Present Robert / James Hilliard'. (ii) `On the 4th day of May next I promise to pay Mr. Peeter H. O Connel or order the full sum of 4 pounds sterling value red. this 30th day of January 1761 and one (...) / James Hilliard.'
