Grammar

19th cent. Paper. 13 × 9.5 cms. 610 pp. in three sections with scribal pagination [i-ii], 1-94, 1-433, in first two sections, and 1-81 in modern pencil in third section. Scribe unidentified. Dates, given in upper margins, range from 1840 to 1856; `Lismore' is given as place of writing on p. 1 section II. The scribe writes in minute lettering, generally in imitation of print, employing Roman, Gaelic, Greek and Gothic scripts. Several pages, particularly in section III, are blank.

Bound in half-leather. `Seamus Ua Casaide Tigh Chluana Glasaonóg Baile Átha Cliath . 20. xii. 1906' on p. 79 of section III. A folded sheet of paper loosely inserted at the back contains the following in the hand of Séamus Ó Casaide: `This MS was described in Sullivan's (Dublin) auction catalogue of Winslow's books in 1902. / Dovey's widow gave or sold the MS to me in 1906. / Perhaps it is also mentioned in some catalogue of D. H. Kelly's books' followed by two of the dates given in the manuscript and `watermarks J Whatman Turkey Mill 1833, H. B. 1831, 182-1838'. Ó Casaide ms 37.

Section I (with dates 1847-56 in upper margins) contains a grammar (verbal system, declension of nouns, syntax etc) of Greek (pp. 19-30), German (pp. 36- 42), Latin (pp. 43-8), Spanish (pp. 52-5), French (pp. 57-62), Italian(pp. 63- 8), Danish (pp. 69-71), Portuguese (pp. 75-84), Dutch (pp. 86-7), Swedish (p. 89, `Brummarks Gramr. 1806' on upper margin).

Section II, headed `Lismore 14 February 1840', contains a list of English verbs illustrated by phrases rendered in Irish, French and / or German etc.

Section III headed `May 30 1847. Nos. refer to Ital. gram rules at beg. this Bk. (pa. 63)'. Consists of phrases in English with Italian translation facing, and an index to section II.
