Notebook of J. H. Todd

19th cent. Paper. 17 × 11 cms. A notebook bound in boards containing notes etc. in the hand of J. H. Todd (unsigned). First 27 leaves and last 7 written on, remaining 39 are blank.

Contents include: (a) Headed `Aug. 28. 1852 - Zurich / A fragment of an antient Pontifical in Irish writing - one leaf containing 4 pages - Pag. 1 is quite illegible having been made the outside cover of a book - a letter here and there is all that is visible. Pag. 2 contains these words', beg. permaneat adprudentibus qui uirginibus uigilantia. Followed (in following pages) by extracts from `Page 3' and `Page 4' followed by scribal comments (b) Headed `No. 2. A leaf of an antient Lectionarium - or a commentary on the gospels in two columns - 7th or 8th cent', with extracts from `First column' and `Second column'. (c) Headed `1 Sept. 1852 Codex St Gallensis No. 904 sec. 8vi Prisciani Grammattica. See Cooper's append A. P.9 No. 3. This book is full of Irish glosses as p. 1. col. 1', beg. libralibus consecutos artibus uideo first word glossed `.i. liberdaib'. `It would be impossible to copy everything of this kind - I will therefore here give only a few that seem more remarkable.' Seven leaves of extracts and comments. (d) Headed `Schaffhausen. Sept. 4 1852 / Vita S. Columba auctor Adamnani. Decidedly Irish. On turning over the leaves I observe the following'. `Cauisius' cited as authority and extracts given. Six leaves. (e) Headed `Bale - MS. A. vii. 3. Psalterium Davidis litt. Hiberno Graecis, cum glossa interliniari Latina. On the first leaf is an Irish hand later than the MS. is a Hymn to the B. V. M.' beg. Cantemus in omni die. Four leaves of extracts etc. (f) `Hymni ex Antiphonario Ecclesiae S. Patricii Dublin.' Hymns beg. Ave virgo virginum; Benedicta es celorum regina; Caelum Deus inclinavit; Dulcis ave penitemtis; Eterni numinis mater et filia; Flos de spina procreatur; Gaude Dei genitrix; Gaude gloriosa mundi vernans rosa; Gaude virgo salutata; Gaude salutata / virgo fecundata; Isse virga humanavit. (g) End of notebook (inverted). `De Primae Caenae forma et ritibus.' Beg. De causae efficenti i.e. auctore. 7 leaves, writing on rectos only.

An explanation for items (a) -(c) above will be found in a letter from Todd dated `Trin. Coll. Dec. 3/52' to a Mr. Robins (NLI ms 2253, item 69), in which he says `... I hope to put the notes of my tour in Switzerland into a shape fit to present to the Academy - The only very important MS I found was a copy of Priscian's works of the 9th cent with a copious gloss and comment in the Irish language ...'.

Inside front cover: `Séamus Ó Casaide 29. X. 1934 [bronntanas O Mh. Mac M.]', `Fras Oehler - Tertulliani quae supersunt omnia - Lips. 1853 2 vols scil tom 1 et 3 tom 2 nondum ed.' Loose folded strip of paper with MS, marked `Miceal Mac Maghnusa got this amongst books from library of - Croly or Crowley - son-in- law of Rev.
